If its his only livilihood I’d say a man could easily tend 2 acres of land, but if he has to work a regular job and he has a family than I’d say 1/2 acre at most

It depends on what you are growing and how much handpicking you are doing. With mechanization some guys can pick up to 40 acres of beans. But an intense 1/2 acre can make as much money and be as much or more work.

I few years ago I lived in the country and owned about an acre and one half. I had about 1/6 of that tilled up and planted every type of vegetable that my family liked. I ended up with pumpkins for every kindergartner in our local school system and about twenty different types of tomatoes. I worked full time and spend my evenings (about three hours each night) and weekends tending to my garden, because that is what I enjoy doing. After cutting my grass I would take the cut grass and place it in the rows between the plants to help cut down on weeds and kept the strongest and healthiest of the plants. This was more than enough to feed a family of four for an entire year. Do you have the time to tend to anything larger? Do you want to sell what you produce? The size of the garden and what you plant depends on many factors and how well you can keep up. Anything larger than what you can tend to will go to waste.
    Good luck and happy gardening!!!
